Credit card debt as a cause of death?

An interesting story from the BBC today: Susan Lewis is campaigning against credit card firms because she claims that overly lax credit caused her husband Stephen to run up over £65,000 in debt on 17 different credit cards, and then, when bombarded with default notices and solicitors letters (in the US we'd call them collection agencies or collection notices), Stephen committed suicide.

While this is happening in England, the issue is no less important in the United States too: how much credit is too much credit? How far into debt should anyone be able to get?
