Dealing with phonecalls

Here's some suggestions if you're getting phonecalls. About ten years ago I was in serious financial shape. Today I'm experiencing difficulties again, although nothing like what I went through back then. And back then I learned some important lessons...

First, if you're getting phonecalls from creditors because of late payments, the absolute best thing you can do (believe it or not) is go ahead and answer the phone and be friendly and polite, and explain your situation, and offer to work with them to get caught up. Because ultimately, your goal is to get your debts paid off, and to move on, while hopefully keeping a decent credit record.

BUT -- if you are in over your head and you absolutely can not deal with them on the phone, then call their number during off-business hours (usually Sunday works) and leave a message on their voice mail telling them that they are not to call you again, and that in the future they must restrict their correspondence to mail. By federal law, they are required to agree to this.

But remember, this does not remove your financial responsibility to them. You still must pay. But at least it will relieve some of the personal tension of dealing with these people. (And on that note, check out my previous posting about remembering who you are.

The truth is, they don't care about you at all. You're just an account number to them.

So don't take it personally or it could ruin your life emotionally.)

And most of all remember, YOU CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THIS! :-)
